Beyond Shopify's Built-in Reports: What You're Missing

·5 min read

Shopify's analytics dashboard tells you what happened — orders, revenue, sessions. But it doesn't tell you why it happened, or more importantly, where revenue is leaking out of your funnel.

What Shopify Shows You

Shopify's built-in reports give you:

  • Total sales and orders over time
  • Top products and collections
  • Traffic sources (last-click only)
  • Conversion rate (aggregate)
  • Customer cohort data (basic)

This is useful for a snapshot, but it's not enough to make informed marketing decisions.

What's Missing

Multi-touch attribution: Shopify credits the last click before purchase. If a customer discovered you through a Facebook ad, came back via an email, and purchased through organic search — Shopify credits organic search 100%. Your Facebook spend looks wasteful when it's actually filling your funnel.

Profit per channel: Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity. Shopify doesn't factor in your ad spend, COGS, shipping costs, or return rates per acquisition channel. A channel generating £10K revenue but costing £9K in ads isn't performing well.

Customer journey mapping: How many touchpoints does your average customer need before purchasing? Which sequences of channels perform best? Shopify can't answer these questions.

Revenue leak detection: Where are potential customers dropping off? Which UTM parameters are misconfigured? Which campaigns are cannibalising each other? These insights require stitching together data that Shopify doesn't surface natively.

Filling the Gaps

The solution isn't to abandon Shopify's reports — they're fine for daily monitoring. But for strategic decisions about where to allocate your marketing budget, you need a layer on top that connects ad spend to actual profit, tracks the full customer journey, and shows you attribution across all touchpoints.

That's what purpose-built e-commerce analytics tools are designed to do. They integrate with your Shopify store, your ad platforms, and your payment processor to give you the complete financial picture that Shopify alone cannot provide.
